TAN September work camp will be held at illacit primary school in Kajiado District, Rift Valley Province(Masai land), Southern Kenya near the border with Tanzania from the 9th to 29th September 2008. illasit primary school is a public primary school. It has a student population of 1,982 and 32 teachers. The school headmaster's name is Mr Gatimu. Volunteers will be accommodated at one of the school building. The following are some of the work scheduled to be undertaken in the work camp;-


  1. Start a big vegetable garden to supplement the school feeding program.

  2. Sensitize maasai women against female genital mutilation(FGM) through existing local initiatives.

  3. Plant trees around the school(this is a TAN 'must do' activity in all camps).

  4. Teach and help the teachers grade the students school work.

  5. Work in the school kitchen(the school runs a government sponsored feeding program).

  6. Volunteer in nearby community health center.

  7. Join the community in a clean up campaign.


On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International airport (JKIA) you will be met by TAN staff.

Their will be an orientation on the 8TH September 2008 at TAN offices in Nairobi. Therefore volunteers are advised to make plans to arrive before this date. It is a MUST to participate in the work camp orientation on the 8th in Nairobi. Participants will leave for the work camp on the 9th September 2008 early in the morning. its about 7 hours journey to illasit primary school.


Participation Fee; you will be required to pay a participation fee of 200 Euros (18000 Kenya shillings) at our offices. this fee cover all airport transfers(arrival and departure), transport to and from work camp project, food and accommodation for period of project and accommodation in Nairobi for two days before and after work camp. Volunteer will be issued with a certificate after the work camp.


volunteers are advice to carry sleeping bags, sleeping mats, a torch, a mosquito net/repellants, entertainment and cultural effects from their country. One must be 18 years old or older to participate in the work camp. Anyone under this age must have written consent from parent of guardian. volunteers traveling with their children are advised to inform us before hand so that arrangements can be made to facilitate them.(for advice on planning your trip contact TAN support staff in your country).
